What is Halitosis?

Halitosis is more commonly known simply as bad breath. It is a foul odour emitted when breathing out. It is more likely to be noticed by somebody else rather than the person suffering from it.

What causes Halitosis?

Bad breath affects around half of the population and can be caused by various factors, including gum disease and smoking.
The most common cause of bad breath is poor oral hygiene.

Poor oral hygiene provides a breeding ground for bacteria on the tongue and mouth, causing a bad smell. In many cases, eliminating the bacteria will rid the person of bad breath.

Other causes of bad breath:

  • Other sinus conditions – You can develop tonsil stones from other mouth and throat conditions. Tonsil stones are small stones that are covered in bacteria producing an odour. Sinus infections like sinusitis caused by inflammation can cause bad breath.
  • Food – Food particles in the mouth can increase the amount of bacteria; after digestion, they enter the bloodstream into the lungs affecting the air exhaled. Spicy foods, onions and garlic are foods that specifically cause bad breath.
  • A dry mouth – Dry mouth is when the mouth does not create enough saliva. Absent saliva causes a build-up of bacteria producing bad breath. People that sleep with their mouths open are more likely to wake up with a dry mouth. A dry mouth usually occurs in the mornings, causing what is known as ‘morning breath.
  • Medications – Many medications are associated with side effects of bad breath; this is because they cause a dry mouth. Some medications that do this include antihistamines, antidepressants, decongestants, sedatives and more.
  • Tobacco – Smokers and tobacco product users are at a higher risk of developing gum disease, another source of bad breath.
  • Tooth extraction – When removing a tooth at the dentist, many people experience bad breath, possibly due to an infection or dry socket.
  • Liver and kidney disease – These diseases make it harder to filter out toxins from the body, which can lead to Halitosis.
  • Gum disease – The growth of bacteria known as plaque causes bad breath.

Halitosis (bad breath) affects up to 50% of the population. It can affect your confidence, relationships and even your working environment. But there are simple ways to cure bad breath that you can incorporate into your day-to-day life.

How to cure bad breath (halitosis)

  • Brush your teeth after you eat.
  • Keep a toothbrush at work to use after eating
  • Floss at least once a day
  • Use mouthwash
  • Regularly get a new toothbrush
  • Brush your tongue
  • Clean dentures or dental appliances
  • Avoid dry mouth
  • Schedule regular dental check-ups
  • Stay hydrated
  • Quit smoking and vaping
  • Nasal irrigation
  • Adjust your diet
  • Sinus rinse for bad breath

Many of these can be done as part of your daily routine before you leave home. Whilst these can make a difference, they cannot solve the problem of Halitosis if the cause is in your nose. The only proven and effective solution is nasal irrigation, a therapy used for centuries to improve health and well-being.

Bad breath can be reduced or completely eradicated when regularly using nasal irrigation. Nasal irrigation flushes out mucus and bacteria, which causes the smell and helps prevent them from returning. Within a few days, you can rid yourself of your Halitosis and regain the confidence that you had before.

Sinus rinse for bad breath

Regular sinus irrigation will keep your nasal passages and sinuses clear, moisturised and healthy. Not only does it flush out bacteria and viruses once you have Halitosis, but it also removes them before they can enter your system.

Dry, inflamed nasal passages are also more susceptible to infection and viruses, so keeping them clear, healthy and moisturised gives you the best possible chance of avoiding sinusitis and many other illnesses, such as the common cold and flu. The throat irrigator included with the SinuPulse ensures your throat and mouth remain as clear and healthy as possible.

Types of nasal irrigation for Halitosis

You may already be aware of nasal sprays, which can temporarily unblock your nose. Nasal sprays can be a short-term solution, but they will not completely clear the passages in the nose and sinuses.

Jala Neti, an age-old technique, uses Neti pots which deliver saline water into the nostril to flush out bacteria and mucus, which can cause odour and bad breath. This clinically proven technique is far more effective, is completely drug-free, and can be used long-term to treat symptoms and prevent occurrence.
Today, we have technology-based solutions to the Neti pot in the form of the SinuPulse Elite, an advanced method of delivering nasal irrigation quickly and effectively.

The SinuPulse Elite Nasal Irrigator

The SinuPulse is a nasal irrigator but also comes with adapters to use as a throat irrigator. The device cleans and cleanses your nose, mouth and throat using a saline solution. This kills bacteria and flushes out mucus, eliminating the cause of your bad breath. At the same time, it also helps moisten those areas, stopping them from drying out and cracking and reducing inflammation.

Why is the SinuPulse different from a regular Neti pot?

Neti (nasal irrigation) has been used for thousands of years and most commonly uses a Neti pot to apply the saline solution. Shaped like a teapot, it requires you to hold the heads of a sink at an angle, which is often awkward, uncomfortable and messy.

The SinuPulse is electronic – it does not rely on gravity to provide the pressure. This means you simply stand upright in front of a sink and let it do the work for you. It also comes with throat tips specifically for cleaning your tongue and throat – perfect for bad breath. It also has a unique mist tip, providing the most comprehensive clean possible by reaching those hard-to-get areas that regular sprays cannot reach.

How the SinuPulse works to cure your Halitosis

The key to the SinuPulse Elite is its pulsating mechanism, which helps stimulate the body’s in-built ciliary flow. The cilia are designed to prevent blockages and free your airways, but the nose can be so congested that it cannot move. The SinuPulse clears out the blockages and stimulates the cilia back into action, ensuring comprehensive irrigation and long-lasting relief, as the nasal passages can once again defend themselves.

The SinuPulse Elite comes with a unique spray tip. The SinuPulse removes any lingering bacteria or mucus that any regular irrigator cannot reach. It ensures that your nasal passages are as clear, sanitised and healthy as can be. Once irrigation is complete, you can use the spray tip to gently moisturise your nasal passages and infiltrate areas that are hard to reach.

How can I permanently get rid of bad breath?

The only way to get rid of your bad breath is to treat the underlying condition and visit your GP to discuss what to do next.
